You never knew

We're living through the most information-rich moment in human history, and we're still deciding everything on autopilot. It was never about the data. It's about the architecture that decides before you do.
You step into a crowded elevator and, without thinking, turn to face the doors. Nobody taught you that in a classroom. You simply know. Or rather — you assume you know. In truth, you're just doing what everyone around you is doing, and that's exactly where this investigation starts.
The question this piece opens with isn't "why are people irrational." That question is lazy, and frankly a little arrogant — as if you, reading this right now, were the exception. The real question is more uncomfortable: why do we keep making predictable, influenceable, shortcut-riddled decisions, precisely in the era with more available information than any other moment in human history?
The answer, in unfairly simple terms: the problem was never a lack of information. It's that your brain was never built to store knowledge. It was built to outsource it — to other people, to the group, to culture, to Google, to whoever's nearby and sounds confident enough.
This isn't a "how to be more rational in 5 steps" article. It's also not about intelligence. It's about architecture — the invisible architecture that decides, before you do, a good chunk of what you'll buy, follow, defend, or stop defending.
Two departments, one quiet war
Start with the elevator. You didn't decide to turn your back on the room — your brain decided for you, in milliseconds, before the "thinking" part of your mind had time to weigh in. That's the kind of decision Daniel Kahneman spent his career describing: fast, automatic, emotional, unable to explain itself.
Kahneman, the Nobel-winning psychologist, called that department System 1. It recognizes faces, finishes sentences, drives familiar streets, feels fear before it understands why. It's fast because it doesn't ask permission. On the other side sits System 2 — slow, deliberate, the one that does mental math and weighs arguments. It's expensive. It burns energy. And, crucially, it's lazy: it only shows up once System 1 admits it's stuck.
System 1 hires without a résumé. System 2 shows up three months later asking who approved that decision.
unHINGED — open case fileThe problem is System 1 never announces when it's in charge. It impersonates you all day long. When you "just know" that a product looks higher quality, that a person seems trustworthy, that a headline is probably true — that's not intuition. That's System 1 making the call and handing it to you already gift-wrapped, with your name on the receipt.

- Decides on first impression
- Loves a good shortcut (heuristic)
- Slow, deliberate, has to be summoned
- Burns energy — literally, glucose
- Checks, questions, ruins the party
- Only shows up once the shortcut fails visibly
This is why reading more news doesn't automatically make you more rational. Information reaches System 2. But most of the day, the one deciding is System 1 — and it doesn't read, it pattern-matches. It's efficient, and it's also the reason you bought that product because the packaging "felt" premium, not because you compared the ingredients.
You know how a zipper works. Do you, though?
Quick test, no googling:
Explain how a zipper works.
Not "what it's for." How it works, mechanically, inside. The two rows of teeth, the slider, exactly what interlocks one side with the other. Try to write it out mentally, in detail, before reading on.
That exercise isn't ours. It belongs to Leonid Rozenblit and Frank Keil, who in 2002 documented what they called the illusion of explanatory depth: the sense that we understand how things work far better than we actually do, right up until someone asks us to explain in detail. Steven Sloman and Philip Fernbach turned that finding into the central argument of The Knowledge Illusion: we constantly confuse the knowledge that exists in the community with the knowledge that exists in our own head.
The illusion of explanatory depth
Research question: do people know how much they actually understand about everyday objects and systems?
Method: participants rated their own understanding of common mechanisms (zippers, toilets, batteries) before and after trying to explain them in writing.
Core finding: self-rated understanding consistently dropped after the explanation attempt — the act of explaining exposed gaps people didn't know they had.
Why it matters: if this happens with simple physical objects, the effect is even larger for abstract topics — policy, economics, health — where the illusion of understanding is rarely put to the test.

This isn't stupidity. It's cognitive design. Sloman and Fernbach argue the human brain never evolved to store encyclopedias — it evolved to coordinate group action. You don't need to know how a zipper works. You just need to know it works, and that someone, somewhere, knows how to fix it if it breaks. Researchers call this the community of knowledge: knowledge lives in the network, not in the individual.
The information arrives. Experience decides where it gets to live.
unHINGED — open case fileAnd here's the uncomfortable twist: you think you "understand" healthcare policy, inflation, a vaccine, the Instagram algorithm — for the exact same reason you thought you understood a zipper. Because the explanation was never actually demanded of you. The internet makes this worse, delivering ready-made answers so fast that the feeling of "I get it" arrives before you've even finished reading.
Five people is enough. Genuinely.
You walk into a supermarket aisle looking for olive oil. There are twenty-three options. You will not evaluate all twenty-three. You will, almost certainly, choose between the two or three that "feel" familiar — because you saw them somewhere, because the packaging echoes something else, because someone mentioned it once. Nobody decides alone in a supermarket aisle. You decide surrounded by other people's decisions, pre-packaged and labeled.
In 1951, Solomon Asch ran one of the most cited experiments in social psychology: he asked participants to compare the length of lines — a trivially easy task — in a group seeded with actors instructed to give obviously wrong answers out loud. A significant share of real participants changed their correct answer to match the group, even facing plain visual evidence. Not out of stupidity. Out of conformity: the cost of disagreeing with the group, even while being right, felt higher than the cost of being wrong together.

You repeatedly saw other people using, recommending, or validating it — and your brain converted social repetition into evidence of quality.
Albert Bandura went further than Asch: his now-classic Bobo doll experiment (1961) showed that we learn entire behaviors — including aggression, including preferences — just by watching other people, with no direct reinforcement required. Social learning is why a trend spreads without anyone needing to individually persuade anyone else. The modern algorithm didn't invent this mechanism. It just figured out how to accelerate delivery.
The algorithm doesn't create trends. It reveals shortcuts.
unHINGED — open case fileThere's a third, heavier name in this same family: Stanley Milgram, whose obedience-to-authority experiments (1961–1963) showed that a substantial share of ordinary people would administer what they believed were dangerous electric shocks to a stranger, simply because a figure of authority instructed them to continue.
Conformity is following the group. Obedience is following the hierarchy. In real life, the two mechanisms rarely show up alone — they stack, quietly, in every line, every group chat, every comment section with "500 likes" sitting at the top. Recognizing which one is operating in a given moment is, on its own, a small act of clarity.
You remember things you never lived
Honest question: do you "remember" the fall of the Berlin Wall? A historic product launch? A political event that shaped the decade you were born into? A good chunk of what we call memory about the world was never lived by us at all — it was inherited. Photos, classes, documentaries, family conversations. French sociologist Maurice Halbwachs called this collective memory: the idea that we remember in groups, through social structures, not as isolated individual archives.
That sounds harmless until you catch the implication: if memory is socially constructed, it's also socially editable. Two families can "remember" the same event in incompatible ways, each with total confidence in their own accuracy. Two countries can teach the same war with opposite narratives, each sounding like plain fact rather than interpretation.
This connects directly to what's called distributed cognition: the idea, developed by researchers like Edwin Hutchins, that we think using external tools — calendars, notes, other people — as literal extensions of the mind, not just handy aids. You don't "know" everyone's birthday. Facebook does, and you outsourced that memory without noticing the trade.
This isn't cause for existential panic. It's actually good news in disguise: distributed cognition is what lets humanity build airplanes, vaccines, and cities without a single person understanding the whole system. The problem isn't outsourcing knowledge. It's not knowing we're doing it.
Why disagreeing with you feels like a personal attack
You read something that contradicts an opinion you've held for years. What happens in your body isn't curiosity. It's discomfort — almost physical. Leon Festinger, in 1957, named that sensation: cognitive dissonance, the unease produced when two beliefs, or a belief and a piece of evidence, collide.
The brain has two available exits. The first, harder one, is updating the belief. The second, far more common one, is distorting, ignoring, or reinterpreting the evidence until it stops being uncomfortable. That second exit has its own name: confirmation bias, and a more sophisticated relative, motivated reasoning — using all of our capacity to "think well" not to arrive at the truth, but to defend a conclusion we already held before we started thinking.
Jean Piaget described how children organize the world into schemas — mental structures that categorize experience. Aaron Beck applied a similar idea to adult life: adults carry schemas too, often distorted ones, about themselves and the world. A schema isn't an opinion — it's a filter that decides, before information even arrives, which drawer it gets filed into.
No human being sees the world as it is. We see the world after it passes through the filter of who we've become. And the more identity we've stapled to an opinion — political, lifestyle, sports team, parenting method — the more expensive it becomes to admit it might be wrong. It's not intellectual weakness. It's identity protection doing exactly the job it was built for.
The problem of not knowing how much you don't know
There's one final layer, and it's the most ironic of all: the same lack of knowledge that leads us astray also stops us from noticing we've gone astray. In 1999, David Dunning and Justin Kruger documented this effect: people with low competence in a given area tend to overestimate their own competence, precisely because the skill needed to spot an error is the same skill that's missing.

It's about anyone, at any intelligence level, entering a new domain where they haven't yet developed enough metacognition — the ability to evaluate their own evaluation.
Metacognition — thinking about your own thinking — is the tool that corrects this mismatch. And it rarely shows up on its own. It has to be summoned, trained, practiced. Julia Galef, in The Scout Mindset, proposes an elegant distinction: there's the soldier mindset, which defends positions like territory, and the scout mindset, which explores the terrain trying to see the actual map, even when the map contradicts what it expected to find.
Maybe personality isn't a collection of independent choices. Maybe it's the unique way we reorganize everything we've borrowed from the world.

Samuel Arbesman, in The Half-Life of Facts, proposes a reframe that should be taught in schools: just like radioactive substances have a half-life, human knowledge does too. Scientific findings become outdated, corrected, or replaced at a predictable rate — not because science is unstable, but because it's, by definition, the most honest process humanity has ever built for admitting error.

Core argument: a large share of what's considered "established fact" in any field tends to be revised, updated, or replaced within decades — a measurable pattern, not a random one.
Why this isn't a reason to distrust science: constant updating is the correction mechanism working as intended. The problem isn't science changing its mind. It's the public expecting it never to.
Practical implication: treating any "fact" as permanent — including the ones in this very article — is, ironically, the same cognitive error this article has been describing.

It's uncomfortable. It's also, according to virtually every author cited here, the only available exit.
Six looks from the investigation
Every scene in this issue is a real place your cognition visits daily, staged like a lookbook — because the shortcuts we're describing don't live in a lab. They live in aisles, elevators, shelves, and crowded streets.
Maybe you know a lot less about your own mind than you thought
Go back to the elevator. Back to the zipper. Back to the aisle with twenty-three bottles of olive oil. None of those scenes change after reading this. You'll still turn your back in the elevator. You'll still pick the olive oil that "feels" familiar. You'll still feel a flash of irritation when someone disagrees with you at dinner.
The difference isn't stopping. It's starting to notice the machinery turning while it turns — System 1 making the call before you do, the illusion of explanatory depth dressing up ignorance as certainty, the group lending you an opinion before you'd formed your own, the schema deciding which drawer each new piece of information belongs in.
It just shipped it faster.
What's left, once you accept that,
isn't despair. It's curiosity with its eyes open.
Maybe the most honest question you can carry out of this article isn't "how do I think more rationally" — it's "who, exactly, am I borrowing most of what I call my opinions from?" You'll probably never know for sure. And if this article did its job, that uncertainty might be exactly where something more interesting than the certainty you walked in with begins.
